The Hospitality of Abraham Icon |
Give me cooking and cleaning all day, as long as I have the physical stamina and energy, it's cake. Today's first challenge was a little different... writing a mission statement. I have written mission statements in the past, but I tend to be a rambler. It can be difficult for me to put things into a clear and concise message. So why am I doing this challenge? Why do I want a clean home?
This is a really good question that as women, we often forget to ask ourselves. Is it pride? Is it guilt? Is it for false appearances--perhaps to make ourselves look "put together" while we are really falling apart?
A scripture comes to mind:
... for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Sam. 16:7
So what does this have to do with cleaning, one might ask. Well nothing, but it does address the fact that what we do on the outside is not always reflective of what is within. We, like Judas, may look and seem put together by our family, friends, and community at large, but God sees beyond these things. It is important that a clean home does not become an idol, a place of pride, and arrogance. So now for my mission statement:
May God keep me humble and grant me the ability to keep my home tidy so that:- We can pray and worship the true and living God in our home with solace and a lack of distractions
- My husband can have a place to rest and relax after long work days
- I can educate and raise my kids in a home that is not filled with chaos and destruction
- So that we can be reflections of God's design (with order and intent)
- So that we can serve others with hospitality in a place without pretense--a place that makes people feel comfortable and welcome. After all, we never know when we are serving God Himself as Abraham and Sarah did (Gen. 18).
